Australia’s Aboriginal people hold one of the oldest cultures on earth. In Western Australia the burning and hunting activities of the Martu people have become a vital part of the desert ecosystem over tens of thousands of years. But when they were cleared off their land in the 1960s this balance was disrupted. Many animal species disappeared and large wildfires took hold.
After returning to their land and winning Native Title over an area larger than England, the Martu formed a series of ranger groups and are now leading the way in conserving one of the largest and most intact arid landscapes in the world.
