Aral Sea Reborn

Al Jazeera, 2013

The Aral Sea was once one of the world’s largest lakes. But after decades of intensive farming in the region, it has shrunk to a tiny fraction of its former size.

Fishing boats are left rusting in the sun and former port towns are now kilometres from the water.

The World Bank and the Kazakh government are spending millions of dollars to re-vive the north Aral Sea, and locals are fishing on it again for the first time in years. But the larger south Aral sea looks destined to dry up.
